Dining around Canyon Lake is its own kind of Hill Country pleasure, all shady patios, live music, and plates built for a day spent on the water. We pulled together the five spots we send friends and guests to first, spanning smokehouse BBQ minutes from the lake, a legendary riverside restaurant in historic Gruene, and open-air icehouses made for sunset. Every one is an easy drive from the lake house, so pick your mood and go.
Built into the stone ruins of an 1878 cotton gin beneath Gruene's landmark water tower, the Gristmill stacks open-air tables down a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, with mesquite trees strung in lights after dark. Order the hand-breaded chicken fried steak or the mesquite-grilled burger and a fresh-squeezed lime margarita, then walk next door to Gruene Hall, Texas's oldest dance hall. It's a large multi-level space, so ask for a river-view table on the lower deck when you check in.
They don't take reservations and the wait tops an hour on weekend evenings, so put your name in, grab a beer, and catch the live music at Gruene Hall while you wait.
This Hill Country roadhouse just off FM 2673 pairs a full bar and a live-music stage with a scratch-kitchen grill, drawing a mix of locals and lake visitors most nights. The half-pound burgers are the reason to come, backed by a weekday happy hour and a weekend brunch that fills the patio. There's a kids' menu and plenty of room, so it works for families early before the evening bands turn it into more of a bar scene.

A no-frills Central Texas smokehouse right on FM 2673, Bare Bull is the local pick for a quick, honest BBQ plate without a trip into New Braunfels. They smoke brisket, ribs, and sausage low and slow and were featured in the San Antonio Express-News '52 Days of Barbecue' series. Order by the pound with a couple of homemade sides and eat at the simple dine-in tables or take it back to the lake house.

Set on the north shore along FM 306, Canyon City Grill is a shaded, picnic-style spot where you order at the window and eat at outdoor tables under the trees. The kitchen builds premium beef burgers to order, including the Texas Heat and the towering Quad, alongside fresh-cut fries and Funnel Cake Fries. Kids can run around the open grounds and it's pet-friendly, making it an easy stop on the way back from the north-shore parks with vegetarian and gluten-free options on hand.
